Art Education

My classes are primarily driven by art history as I believe that through art we are connected to every other concept on this planet. It wraps around the very fibre of our existence. Studying famous artists, both contemporary and historic assists children to understand many concepts far beyond the gratification of a completed piece of work. We discuss colour theory and the ability colour has to make you feel a certain way, promote an idea for business or make something appear different. We talk about the struggles and adventures of various artists through history and why they created art. We speak about feelings in art and how to appreciate the value in the tiniest of details.

The children in my classes know that there are no mistakes in art, just as their are no mistakes in life. Every action is about learning and progressing and building confidence. There is no competition, no piece of work better than any other. Each is an improvement on the self.

My visual arts practice with children is inspired by

Generations of women that have gone before me. My mother and grandmother were creative women. They lovingly passed on a passion for not only sketching, drawing and painting but also a sense of play, humour and awareness of the world around you. I grew up with women who helped me discover my connection with nature and myself. They are the role models on which I base my practice.

I believe that many more children these days are growing up without that sense of connection or belonging. If I can facilitate that through my art practice and give them a piece of the puzzle to take home with them, well then for that day, I’ve done my job.
